Neorealism
Neorealism came into motion in the 1943 with the film Ossessione by Luchino Visconti. Many of these movies that had the neorealism quality to them were the early and post war movies that mostly focused on the devastation that was brought to millions of families.
This was very noticeable in Bicycle Thieves where it was based around a man trying desperately to provide for his family. We see and feel everyone’s struggle even if their not main characters we see the real people on the streets looking hopeless.
The main thing i thinks that makes neorealism special is the way the movies put you right there with the actors, and the actors don’t look professional they look and feel more real. In the swimming scene in Moonlight you see the waves splashing up at the camera in a way that makes you feel as if you were actually there.
Though neorealism movies were mostly in the 1940s and 50s, Moonlight has all the qualities that make a hyper-realistic movie. The movie reminded me of a music video for rap singer Logic’s song suicide hotline. It puts you in the situation and doesn’t sugar coat anything like most Hollywood music videos/movies do. Neorealism is about being into the story so much that you can see everything happening in real life. It’s a movie that you would believe is based on a true story.
Neorealism movies put the little people into the spotlight showing that everybody, even an ordinary man, has an extraordinary story that’s worth telling. It shows you that you don’t need to be a policeman or soldier or in the FBI to have a story where people can feel the realism and sympathize with an average person.
The word count for this essay is very low. This fact speaks also to what is missing, which is detail and support. As you reread your work, consider each sentence and its job within a larger argument. When I read your essay with this structural point in mind, I feel I’m reading a collection of thesis statements, each of which would require a paragraph to support it, along with specific details from the films and resources. A strong point that you might have draped a whole argument around is your connection between the water scenes in Moonlight and the neorealist style—a point that requires more examples and investment from you. Other notable omissions are any mention of Killer of Sheep, a required film for this topic.
